China's Rapeseed Production Sees Slight Increase
China's rapeseed production for the 2024/25 marketing year is projected at 15.8 million metric tons, according to the latest USDA report. This represents a modest 1% increase from last month's estimate but a 3% decrease compared to the previous year. However, the figure is still 7% above the 5-year average of 14.8 million metric tons.
Despite the production increase, the harvested area for rapeseed has declined by 5% from last year, reaching 7.4 million hectares. This decrease in area is attributed to a 0.4 million hectare reduction compared to the previous year. However, the yield per hectare has increased by 2% from last year and the 5-year average, reaching 2.14 tons per hectare.
The favorable weather conditions during the critical growing period from January to March, particularly in major growing regions like Sichuan, Henan, Hunan, and Anhui provinces, played a significant role in achieving the higher yield. The report highlights that soil moisture levels remained adequate to abundant during this period, supporting the growth of the winter rapeseed crop, which accounts for approximately 90% of China's total production.
